on a serious note

i just read this article which thoroughly pissed me off:
Third-Grader Dies After Shooting Self With Uzi
Ashford Boy Was At Westfield Sportsman's Club

The small Connecticut town of Ashford was reeling Monday, the day after a third-grade resident shot himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun at a Massachusetts gun fair, police said.

Police said 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club in Westfield, Mass. Westfield police Lt. Lawrence Vallier said the accident occurred at about 2 p.m.

Christopher was with his father and a certified instructor at the time of the accident, police said.

“The 8-year-old boy was allowed to shoot a .9 mm micro Uzi machine gun,” said police Lt. Hipolito Nunez. “The weapon was loaded and prepared by the instructor and handed to the 8-year-old boy. The 8-year-old boy fired the weapon, the front end of the weapon raised up to his head, and a round struck him in the head.” [full story here]
what the hell? i'd feel uneasy about my 21 year old son shooting an uzi machine gun...but an 8 year old?? seriously?!?! there were two "responsible" adults there and not an ounce of common sense between them.

this would normally be charlton heston's cue to have an nra rally nearby. i wonder who they're going to send now?

Oh come on. We don't want to outlaw Uzis...I mean what would the deer hunters use? :P

Seriously though, who really needs a weapon like that? It seriously angers me to hear people talk about their right to bear arms and honestly believe that it is so they can take over the government if they so believe it is overstepping. As if any weapon any of us have access to would EVER stop the government. That's such a BS response it's not even funny. Secondly, generally when people try to use one of these babies in self defense, they end up hurting themselves more than helping. Furthermore, for this very reason, children getting their hands on these guns (which happens WAY too often) and killing themselves or others is reason enough not to have them. No one is honestly going to take an Uzi hunting!

OK, done ranting. :)
